Help connecting a microphone to a camcorder...?
I have recently purchased a Canon Vixia HF R 21 camcorder. I want to upload interviews with athletes and news makers to my website.
Because interviews are what my videos will be primarily focused around, I purchased an Audix OM-2 (dynamic) microphone.
I have 20 ft mic cable (xlr fitting) as well as an adapter to go from the cable's 1/4" dimension to the camcorder's mic input dimension of 3.5 mm.
I've recorded video with the camera's internal mic's and received your standard audio...with the Audix...I don't get anything.
In addition, when recording with the Audix, I set up the external mic settings on the camcorder.
I'm wondering if anyone can troubleshoot why I'm not getting an audio with the mic, and if this mic will even work with the camera?
Thanks for the input.
The Audix OM-2 mic uses an XLR connector. That means you need to use an XLR cable... but to get to the Canon HF R21's 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio in some sort of adapter is required.
If you are using an "adapter cable tale" that goes from XLR to 1/8", we don't know if the tale is compensating for the resistance difference - assuming the 1/8" plug LOOKS like a stereo plug but is really a TRS plug. They are VERY different. I do not recommend this because the weight of the cable and tale on the 1/8" connector can easily break the connector leaving the plug in the camera and you have WAY bigger problems. But if you insist on doing this, the the correct cable tail is needed. NOT TRS.
The *best* way to go from XLR to 1/8" audio in is to use an XLR adapter. I like those from juicedLink and BeachTek... XLR cable plugs into the the XLR Adapter, the XLR Adapter is mounted to the bottom of the camcorder and the 1/8" stereo plug carries the right signal into the camcorder. AND you get manual audio control with the knobs on the XLR adapter that your camcorder does not have.
Sing hello to the iRig PRE, turns iOS devices into on-the-fly mic preamps (Engadget)
IK Multimedia's never fallen short of giving you some of the better tools for
all your on-the-go music-making utilizing your beloved iOS device as the main
rig. Now, the peripheral connoisseur's taking the wraps off its iRig PRE,
which aims to help you digitally process those glorious vocal chords by
allowing you to plug in any XLR mic into it without the need for other
adapters or cables. Furthermore, the dongle features a 3.5mm jack for audio
monitoring, gain control and can squeeze a runtime of up to 40 hours (dynamic
microphones) or 15 hours (phantom powered condenser mics) from a standard 9V
battery. The PRE amp will also come included with two of iRig's usual suspect
apps (iRig Recorder and VocaLive) to help you get started in your quest to be
the next idol. We know you can't wait to get your singing on, but you'll have
to wait until "early Q2" to do so, for a moderate price of $39.99 -- perhaps
the iRig Mic can get you through the days in the meantime.
